Clayton Lake SP NM

The wind finally died down some time after midnight.  We woke to blue sky, super calm water, it’s like a mirror and it’s peacefully quiet, not a sound anywhere, just us moving about.  It’s only 11C though!

Kim’s only just finished his first cup of tea and already the entry steps are lubed and the windscreen is debugged.  Better make him another cup of tea after all that activity.

After brekkie we check out the trails to the other camp around the lake.  We are in the only one with power and water and the other camps are pretty much deserted.  Ours however is in demand there are at least half a dozen rigs come in wanting to stay without a reservation.

The water is really weird, there is a ring of turquoise stones at the water edge and other the other side of the lake the water is an opaque green.

Ring of Confidence??

Later on after we’ve had a relax in the sun and it gets a bit cooler, hike up to the Dinosaur Trail and there are actual dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock. Incredible, that this is just in a random state park campground.  Need to be careful though, this is cougar territory and in the visitors centre is a list of what you should and should not do if you come across one.  There are apparently bears here too.  Oh, and rattlesnakes!

Promise of Dinosaur Tracks.....

Actual dinosaur tracks - amazing!!

So the wind has dropped and the sun has set, leaving a rosy glow on the horizon and I look out the window and I swear I see a UFO!!  No I have not had a drink!  Kim sees it too and then looks with the binoculars!  Hmm we are in New Mexico, probably 300 miles directly north of Roswell, home of UFO’s!!  I wonder if one has gone AWOL??  It’s still there 25 minutes later.

So after that excitement, we are watching a movie and out the corner of my eye I see - either a little field mouse, or Kim’s shadow, darting across the floor up towards the front.  We have a mouse trap and a couple of sticky things which should capture said cheeky little rodents.  But not on day one!  Will keep you posted.
