Well I take
back my comment about the “hi-do-ho” camp name, Happy Holiday Resort was
actually quite nice. It was large, over
300 camp sites, cabins and motels, with a big general store, petrol, a games
room, a big pool and a bar and gambling pokies even. Some of the sites, like ours, have a covered
concrete patio with picnic tables and night lighting, nice touch. Their rules were written with a degree of
humour, little comments like no barking, by either your or your dog, frowns are
not allowed - if you feel compelled to have one, leave it at the dump station
and pick it up when you leave. So we had
a nice night there.

Woke early,
the sun is out and Kim has a bee in his bonnet about getting up on the roof to
replace the AC shrouds and check out the slide awning cover which was hanging
loose yesterday. So out comes the ladder
and up he goes, then the neighbours want to help, (even if still in their pj’s) - friendly place!
We are on
the road by 10.30 with a detailed plan on where we go today but we don’t stick
to the plan! The drive is nice, leaving
Rapid City we see numerous breweries and wine tastings, it is a happening place
and right on the doorstop of Mt Rushmore. Road signs warn of big horn sheep crossing, but
we don’t see any. But we do see a bear
cub – even if it was behind a fence in
the animal park. Hill City was humming,
lots of bikes and today we also see quite a few of those three wheel Polaris
trikes. Moving on to Custer we see Crazy
Horse has progressed in the ten years since we last saw him, they are working
on the extended finger now.

Before we
get into the next big town is Hot Springs we drive through the Wind Cave
National Park where we finally see prairie dogs, those are the little critters
which dig holes in the dirt. Today they
were sitting proudly on top of their mounds of dirt in the sun! We also see buffalo close to the road.

About five
miles or so further on is the Angostura Reservoir, where we hope to camp for a
couple of days. We rock up to the
Recreation Area Campground hoping for a site in one of their six campgrounds and
get the one and only left! It’s not
right by the water but that is just a short walk away and we have power. It’s hot – gets up to 38C mid afternoon.
6.30 pm the
sky turns black and thunder and lightning sets in so we race to bring in all
our stuff outside before it rains and sit back and watch the impressive
lightning show. It’s still 30 C outside,
hotter in as we had to close the windows on the wet side and I’m cooking! Storm only lasts an hour or so. Then we watch a couple of movies and another
good day had by all.
